AMANZI Triathlete Penny Hayes competed at the Oceania Sprint Championships in Kinloch over the weekend. Penny finished in 12th place in the individual race and 3rd place in the teams race, where she led out the swim leg. What got you started?

I swam in a teams triathlon and loved the atmosphere of the sport.

How do you set your goals?

Decide what I want to achieve and sit down with my coach, Sid, to put steps in place as a pathway to my goals.

Do you have a word, mantra or motto that you live your life by?

Work hard, play harder. (in my case, race harder).

What is your biggest source of motivation?

My desire to be the best I possibly can.


Favourite place to train and why?

Running in the Port Hills, Christchurch. Because there are endless trails to run, get an amazing view of our city, and nothing beats home.

Favourite training sessions?

Long run in the hills and yoga.

Least favourite training sessions?

Bike - run reps, until they are over, then love them.

What exercise do you absolutely dislike but do anyways because you know it works?

Having to get up so early for swimming, but in the end it gets it done.

Favourite song/s you workout to?

Coolio - Gangster's Paradise.


What do you do to mentally train yourself?


What weaknesses have you overcome and how?

Coming into triathlon at such a late age and having so much to learn. So I learn off the best at every chance I get to better myself as an elite athlete.

Do you have a word, mantra or motto that you live your life by?

Work hard, play harder.

What's your best advice for dealing with mental negativity? How do you get out of your own head?

Come up with solutions to the negativity to turn it into positivity. Busy myself with friends or play music really loud.


What is your favourite race?

Wanaka, NZ. A sprint triathlon around the streets at night, which are packed with spectators.

When you go into competition, what's going through your head?

Have I got all my gear, thinking about the course, trying to relax.

When are you the most nervous while you are competing?

The minute before the start.

Do you hear the crowd roaring when you're competing?

Most of the time on the bike and run.

Best tip for race day?

Have fun, the hard work has been done in training.

What was the last piece of advice your coach said to you before you competed?

Go out and enjoy it.

What is your ultimate goal as an athlete?

Olympic Champion


What is your worst habit?

Being addicted to lollies.

If your life was a movie what would be the title?

If you were an animal what would you be and why?

Giraffe. Because they get to be up so high all the time and always look happy.

Who would you say is your biggest fan and why?

Both my parents, for their unconditional love and support.
