If you are like me, you tend to dislike swimming in winter, right? It just isn’t as appealing as a perfect warm swim in the middle of summer! But for the rare few, ice swimming has become all the rage.
Ice swimming has been around for a little while now but really kicked off with the creation of the International Ice Swimming Association in 2009. Ice swimming is exactly what it sounds like, literally swimming in icy water. It takes place in an open water 25-meter ‘pool’, where slabs are cut off of the top of a frozen lake in Russia. And just to top it off, a race is normally 1km long…
You’d think this is crazy enough as it is but there are some pretty strict rules that you need to follow for an Ice Swim to be official. The water needs to be below 5 degrees Celsius and absolutely no wetsuits are allowed!!
As you can imagine you need to undergo a medical examination and fill out an extensive medical questionnaire before you are allowed to participate in an event. So definitely do not go and give this a go on your own!
Right now, one of the organization’s main goals is to bring ice swimming into the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, so maybe I’ll hit the pool tonight and complain a little less about how ‘cold’ I am!
